Sunday nights are a marvelous thing and not just because my hangover has usually subsided by then but because HBO airs some of the best programming on television. Now, I hate Sundays so I just TiVo the shows and watch them on Monday but it doesn't matter when you watch the Sunday shows just that you do watch them. By "them" I mean The Sopranos, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and now Deadwood. Unfortunately, The Sopranos has been stagnating for the past season [hate, shaking fist in air] and Curb Your Enthusiasm just ended its fourth season [sigh, sad clown teardrop rolling down face], which leaves Deadwood to pick up the slack. And pick up the slack it does. If you have not watched this show yet you need to get your fucking shit together and stop jerking off to Seinfeld reruns and beer commercials. Don't worry, you can redeem yourself and you don't have to commit seppuku just yet since HBO is airing the first three episodes back to back this coming Friday. The episode that aired last Sunday solidified Deadwood as one of the greatest shows of all time when Wild Bill Hickock referred to a man's gotch eye as "a cunt" then continued to refer to other attributes of the same man as looking like "cunts" to him. Al Swearengen the pseudo antagonist of the show, played by Ian McShane, is utterly superb. Played like Alan Rickman plays all his villains (Die Hard, Costner's Robin Hood, and the marvelous Quigley Down Under) Swearengen can make killing people extremely funny. Plus, and this endears me to Swearengen even more, is his over abundant use of "fuck". Swearengen actually says "fuck" about every third word and it doesn't sound contrived at all it just sounds fucking awesome. This past episode had Swearengen designating an area outside his office for his lackey's to fart making me almost throw up my Whataburger due to a preteen-girlie-giggle-fit. So if you like violence and comedy… and you do since it's the opiate of the masses, watch Deadwood as it is currently peerless on television.
