Years ago I watched the E! True Hollywood Story on Bob Guccione of Penthouse fame. In the hour long show on Guccione's life the film Caligula is discussed at length. At the time, I'd heard of the movie but didn't know much about it. The movie was universally panned by critics as being too offensive in virtually ever way. Guccione, of course, thought Caligula was Oscar caliber. After watching the E! True Hollywood Story I thought: I like Penthouse and I like offensive material, I'll probably like Caligula. So The Plug and I went to some indie movie renting shop and rented the unrated, collectors edition of Caligula.
Plug and I watched it, it was terrible, and I vowed never to watch it again. I remember it being very pornographic, violent, disturbing, and long. Now you're saying, "but you love pornography and violence!" Yes, yes I do. But I remember it as being a less exciting, violent form of pornography; it was more like a snuff movie.
Fast forward to last night. Little Boots has been in town esquiring and he's been interested in watching Caligula since I first brought up that I had seen the film years ago. Up until recently I've refused to watch it since I remembered making that decision after seeing it the first time. I finally succumbed to the peer pressure and told Little Boots I'd watch it with him. So he ordered the DVD from Amazon, it arrived yesterday, and Little Boots, Luca, and I watched it in its full 153 minute length last night. It was still terrible, but not as terrible as I first remembered it. Little Boots mentioned that while it was disgusting it certainly wasn't disturbing. Amazingly, I actually agree with him.
Here are a few of the acts vividly depicted in the movie:
- gay, oral sex (male on male)
- rape
- gay, anal fisting, rape (male on male)
- live birth
- necrophilia
- severing a penis and feeding it to dogs
You seriously see all of the above explicitly depicted interspersed with more mainstream pornographic acts like incest, male/female blowjobs with moneyshots, and girls rubbing blood into their pussies and then pissing it out. I saw all that shit and found it disturbing years ago, now I just got tired of watching such a poorly acted movie. I don't know if it's just that movies like Irreversible and Requiem For A Dream have desensitized me to disturbing images on screen or if I've just become so indifferent to virtually everything that I can no longer be disturbed. At this point I'm leaning towards the latter. I've already grown so indifferent to the trivialities of life that I'm indifferent to even being alive. Some people, and by 'some' I mean 'most', would say that my attitude is keeping me from enjoying life. I say that the beauty of being completely indifferent is that I don't give a shit.
Hollah if ya hear me.
